Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Disney’s Mulan are currently the lone summer blockbusters set to release in July, providing hope that moviegoers and the entertainment industry at large could return to normalcy post-coronavirus. This hope, however, is dwindling now after Los Angeles county extended their stay at home order through July.
Any big budget movie that needs a production budget over 200 million requires much larger markets and a larger audience to make a profit. With New York City still being the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in America, both movies are unlikely to have full access to the two largest markets in the United States. Simply put, these movies would most likely not meet the box office levels needed to break even unless there is a drastic change in both areas in the coming months.
Industry and box office experts do not expect these movies to release without both LA and NYC markets being available. Neither movie has, at the time of writing this, moved their release date, but it would not be surprising if in the coming days or weeks they were moved from their expected slots. This is a disappointing revelation for movie fans, but remember that any situation involving the coronavirus pandemic is fluid and, with many areas around the world seeing their curve flatten at an exponential rate, this could change any week.
