Spider-Man: Brand New Day officially becomes the number one grossing film domestically. The film beat out Star Wars: Force Awakens‘ record of $936.6 million with $936.7 million domestically. The movie also hold third place internationally for global box office, right behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. Sony’s and the official Spider-man instagram page posted the achievement yesterday. “Doesn’t get bigger than this. Thank you to the fans for helping #SpiderManBrandNewDay make cinematic history–it’s now the highest-grossing domestic release of ALL TIME at the North American box office. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, exclusively in theatres,” is what the post read followed by clips from the movie.
Another Spider-Man film sits on the domestic box office list at number four, which is Spider-Man: No Way Home. the movie saw the return of characters that were in previous Spider-Man films that were not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Picture chief Tom Rothman said,”…the problem for a while was, ‘How do you top that? What do we do next when we just put in all our Spider-Men? The strategic decision was—rather than trying what we all thought would be perhaps an empty effort of going quote, unquote bigger—we just went deeper. That was a very conscious choice to focus on how we could make the audience feel.”
