J. A. Bayona, whose previous works include The Impossible, The Orphanage, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, has been tapped to helm Netflix’s Spanish-language catastrophe film Society of the Snow, which returns Bayona to the real-life disaster he previously explored with The Impossible that came out in 2012 starring Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, and Tom Holland.
The film, Society of the Snow, based on Pablo Vierci’s book La Sociedad De La Nieve, is set in 1972 and tells the actual account of what happened when an Uruguayan Air Force flight brought a rugby team to Chile crashes on a glacier in the Andes. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the accident, and they were forced to resort to extraordinary methods, including cannibalism, to survive in one of the world’s harshest settings
The Spanish-language film, written by Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, and Nicolás Casariego.
Enzo Vogrincic Roldán, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Tomas Wolf, Diego Ariel Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero, Rafael Federman, Felipe González Otaño, Agustín Della Corte, Valentino Alonso, Simón Hempe, Fernando Contigiani García, Benjamín Segura and Jerónimo Bosia are among the cast.
Society of the Snow will be shot in the Sierra Nevada (Andalucía, Spain), in Montevideo (Uruguay), and several places in the Andes (both Chile and Argentina), notably El Valle de las Lágrimas, where the events actually happened.
Bayona’s return to Spanish-language filmmaking will mark 14 years since he made a jump to English-language films.
