Ahead of its world premiere at the forthcoming Sundance Film Festival, Sony Pictures Classics has acquired worldwide rights for Luca Guadagnino’s romantic drama Call Me By Your Name. The film stars Timothée Chalamet (Interstellar) and Armie Hammer (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) and is an adaptation of André Aciman’s novel of the same name. Call Me By Your Name is one of the more anticipated titles to screen at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and makes its world premiere at the Park City mainstay in the Premieres section on January 22nd. Variety was the first to report.
Set in Italy in the 1980s, the film focuses on a relationship that spawns from a chance meeting between a 17-year old boy (Chalamet) and a twentysomething (Hammer) – the gay romantic drama has already seen echoes of that of the 2005 Oscar winner Brokeback Mountain. Of note, the novel involved a sexually explicit sequence that included a peach, so it may be particularly interesting when the MPAA decides on a rating for the film. Guadagnino adapted the screenplay along with Walter Fasano (I Am Love) and legendary filmmaker James Ivory. Michael Stuhlbarg (Steve Jobs) co-stars.
Sony Pictures Classics shelled out a reported $6 million on the title, noting a potential high interest in Guadagnino’s latest. Reportedly, other distributors expressed interest in the film as well. The Italian-born Guadagnino has seen his profile raised stateside thanks to strong critical and art-house reactions to his 2010 melodrama I Am Love and this past summer’s A Bigger Splash – both film starred Oscar winning actress Tilda Swinton. He is currently filming Suspira, an upcoming thriller that will also star Swinton, as well as A Bigger Splash alum Dakota Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz (Clouds of Sils Maria) and Sylvie Testud (La Vie en Rose).
