After a year and a half of pre-production, Jurassic World: Dominion has finally wrapped shooting. The shoot required 40,000 COVID tests and millions spent on safety protocols. The third Jurassic World film was one of the first major studio movies to resume production after the pandemic caused difficulties for the industry.
“There are a lot of emotions,” director Colin Trevorrow said. “I’m not sure I can put it into words. It has been remarkable. Our crew and our cast has been so resilient. All producers have worked around the clock to make it the best it can be. It has been inspiring.”
To manage the production’s medical requirements, Universal commissioned a private medical facility called Your Doctor. After the many tests, only around 100 returned positive, some of them being false positives. The studio spent between $6-8M total on safety protocols alone.
“We designed our return-to-production guidelines with safety being the foremost priority and everyone associated with Jurassic World: Dominion stepped up, held themselves and those around them accountable, and the results have been amazing.” Chairman Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, Donna Langley said. “Congratulations to our filmmakers and cast for their tireless efforts that paved the way for other productions across the industry to get back to work.”
The filming of Dominion was originally meant to start February 2020, but was pushed to July due to the pandemic. Filming was pushed back once again until October due to positive COVID results. Trevorrow hopes that the atypical filming experience will enhance the final film, which is set to come out in summer 2022.
“This movie is about the need to co-exist and survive together,” Trevorrow said. “If this pandemic has taught us anything it’s that we need the different generations to protect each other. It was the right movie to be making at this moment.”
