Two-time Oscar winner Renée Zellweger is returning to the screen as Bridget Jones in Universal Pictures’ upcoming installment of the franchise based on the best-selling book series by Helen Fielding.
The working title is Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson are confirmed to return alongside new cast members Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Leo Woodall (The White Lotus, One Day).
Michael Morris (Better Call Saul) is directing. The three previous Bridget Jones films (2001’s Bridget Jones’s Diary, 2004’s Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and 2016’s Bridget Jones’s Baby have been massively successful, bringing in more than $760 million worldwide at the box office.
The film is slated to premiere in theaters internationally and on Peacock in the U.S. on Valentine’s Day 2025.
Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Jo Wallett will produce and Amelia Granger and Sarah-Jane Wright will executive produce through Working Title Films. Helen Fielding will also serve as an executive producer. Miramax is co-financing.
Senior executive VP of production development Erik Baiers and creative executive of production development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project on behalf of the studio. London Screen Academy trainees have been selected to work on the project across several departments.
Mad About the Boy marks Grant’s return to the film series after his character, Daniel Cleaver, was presumed dead in Bridget Jones’s Baby and was later revealed to be alive.
It is unknown as of now what roles Woodall and Ejiofor will be playing in the film. Colin Firth, who has played a prominent role in the past three films will not be returning.
