Eli Roth Reveals How ‘Borderlands’ Nabbed Cate Blanchett

Eli Roth’s adaptation of the video game Borderlands has been able to nab a surprising amount of  A-List talent, including the iconic Cate Blanchett. The Hollywood Reporter published director Eli Roth’s comments on Blanchett’s casting at CinemaCon. The key? Not thinking she would say yes.

Roth called Blanchett on a whim, and talked about her role in the 2022 film Tár. “People love seeing you with a conductor stick, and I’m going to throw a flame thrower in her hand,” Roth recalled. He was surprised to hear that one of Blanchett’s favorite movies is Escape From New York, which has an apocalyptic setting like Borderlands

Blanchett plays Lilith, the leader of a crew of criminals trying to liberate a vault on the apocalyptic planet Pandora. Her crew is made up of Roland (Kevin Hart), Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the robot Claptrap (voiced by Jack Black), and Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt).

Roth and Greenblatt (Barbie, Ahsoka), also discussed how she was told to watch My Dinner With Andre to prepare for her part in the film, despite its wildly different tone. The whole team went on to watch the film multiple times during the production. “Somehow, watching those movies put us in the right headspace,” Roth explained.

Borderlands opens on August 9th. Watch the first trailer below!
