A new trailer for John Slattery’s God’s Pocket has landed, showcasing more glimpses of the incredible talent of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. This film marks Mad Men star Slattery’s feature-length directorial debut. It premiered at the Sundance film festival, two weeks before Hoffman’s untimely death on February 2.
The film adaptation was written by Alex Metcalf, and is based on Pete Dexter’s 1983 novel of the same title. The movie adaptation of God’s Pocket focuses Mickey Scarpato, played by Hoffman (The Master, Capote), who attempts to cover up the (possibly accidental) death of his stepson, Leon. A columnist, played by Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), intervenes, and the relationship between Hoffman’s character and Leon’s mother Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) becomes increasingly conflicted as they uncover a questionable construction “accident.” With the help of a misguided best friend, dramatized by John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?), Mickey finds himself increasingly entrapped in a web of lies.
Thankfully, God’s Pocket is not the only film that Hoffman left us. As previously mentioned by mxdwn Movies, Anton Corbijn’s thriller, A Most Wanted Man, also debuted at the Sundance Festival and has a release date of July 25. God’s Pocket will be the first of Hoffman’s final four films to hit theaters, concluding with the final Hunger Games pictures.
God’s Pocket hits theaters May 9, the same as Chef and Neighbors.
