Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly Back Together With Adam McKay for Sony’s ‘Border Guards’

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in ‘Step Brothers’

Sony is going to give it another go with the goofball comedy pairing of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly on Border Guards, as first reported by Deadline. Ferrell’s frequent collaborator Adam McKay is looking to again be directing Ferrell and Reilly, which would mark the trio’s first reunion since 2008’s mildly successful Step Brothers and 2006’s hit Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby.

It seems Border Guards will follow two good friends, played by Ferrell and Reilly, who decide to give meaning to their lives by helping to protect America’s southern border. Somehow along the way, the good-intentioned buddies find themselves accidentally on the wrong side of the border sin identification and must somehow sneak back into the U.S.

Sony has tapped British comedy writer Jesse Armstrong to pen the script. Armstrong scored a shared Oscar nomination for his work on 2009’s In the Loop and, it seems, has already finished the script for a biopic on Republican strategist Lee Atwater for Ferrell and McKay’s Gary Sanchez Productions, with McKay looking to direct that as well.

Surely Sony is banking on McKay, Ferrell and Reilly’s recent successes to score gold for the studioMcKay and Ferrell’s Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was a solid hit last year. Warner Bros.’ hugely successful animated The LEGO Movie featured Ferrell as the hilarious villain Lord Business.  Reilly voiced the titular character in Disney’s huge hit animated Wreck-It-Ralph in 2012. We’ll have to wait and see if this trio, along with Armstrong’s script talent, can once again come together and produce a hit with Border Guards.

Reilly appears next in this Summer in the fast-approaching release of Marvel’s highly anticipated Guardians Of The Galaxy. Ferrell will appear next in Welcome To Me alongside Kristen Wiig later this year.
