Oscar-Nominated Six Times For ‘The Father’ Director Florian Zeller Has His Next Big Project ‘The Son’ Already Lined Up

French playwright Florian Zeller just learned that his first feature film, The Father, has earned six Oscar nominations on Monday morning. Zeller disclosed to Deadline via Zoom shortly after the nominees were confirmed that he is currently wrapping up an adaptation of his most recent play: The Son.

The Father is a story about the gradual decline into dementia told from Anthony’s (Anthony Hopkins) perspective as he wanders lost around a mental hall of mirrors, unable to remember his daughter (Olivia Colman) and his surroundings.

The Son is part of a trio with The Father and The Mother, another of Zeller’s plays.

The Father was nominated for Best Picture and received adapted screenplay nominations for Zeller and his lifelong adaptation translation collaborator Christopher Hampton. Hopkins also got a nomination and became the Academy’s oldest acting nominee in history. The nominations also went to Colman for supporting actress, Peter Francis as production designer with set decorator Cathy Featherstone, and Yorgos Lamprinos for editing.

“This is something we can all share among the team,” Zeller said. “To make a film is so much work and so many dreams, it’s a collective work, and it’s common dreams, and these are dreams that we are making together.”

Zeller continued: “This is not a streamer film, and this is not a political film,” he said, “It’s just a film about love and about human relationship.”
