Some more news about the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie has come to light. Specifically it has been reported that this new reboot will getting an R rating, which is important because the Mortal Kombat video game franchise is infamous for its violent fatalities.
The previous Mortal Kombat movie, that was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and its sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation were notorious for only having PG-13 ratings. At the time the studio was trying to make the original Mortal Kombat appeal to a wider audience, but they ended up alienating the video game series’ gore-loving fanbase. Although a lack of violence was not the only problem plaguing these movies, it was still a major issue.
This time around it looks like the studio has learned their lesson, because according to the Mortal Kombat reboot’s screenwriter, Greg Russo, Warner Brothers studios is allowing this movie to contain the exorbitant R-rated violence that a Mortal Kombat movie deserves. After the success of R-rated movies like Deadpool and Logan, studios are more willing to make movies with R ratings.
As of right now Sub-Zero, who is being played by Joe Taslim, is the only role that has been cast. Hopefully director Simon McQuaid will be able to properly adapt Sub-Zero’s infamous spin ripping fatality into film.
