Twenty-four years after audiences first visited the hilariously harrowing fictional town of Woodsboro, California, it has been confirmed that Neve Campbell will reprising her role as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming installment of the Scream franchise. This is an exciting announcement for fans of the long-running franchise, originally created by Kevin Williamson and historically directed by the late Wes Craven. It also sounds exciting for Campbell, who stated, “I am beyond excited to step back into the role of Sidney Prescott and return to Woodsboro.”
With Craven no longer at the helm to direct, the honor has been bestowed upon Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Bettellini-Olpin and Gillett make up two-thirds of the filmmaking collective Radio Silence, with the third member being Chad Villella, who is signed on as an executive producer for the upcoming project. The trio are best known for the horror anthology V/H/S and 2019’s Comedy/Horror Ready or Not, the latter of which paved a solid foundation for the next installment of the self-aware Scream franchise.
According to Neve Campbell, the upcoming Scream film, dubbed a “relaunch” by Spyglass Entertainment and Paramount Pictures, will be in good hands. She said that, “after spending a week with Radio Silence, they have shown such love, respect and admiration for Wes Craven and all that he’s created in the Scream franchise.”
Radio Silence is also excited to work with Campbell, stating “It’s hard to express how much the character Sidney Prescott shaped our love of movies and to have the chance to work with Neve is truly a dream come true. It just wouldn’t be a Scream movie without Neve and we’re so excited and honored to join her in Woodsboro.”
Neve Campbell will also be accompanied by Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who will be reprising their roles as Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley, respectively. New cast members that will be joining the filming in Wilmington, North Carolina will include Melissa Barerra (In the Heights), Jack Quaid (The Boys), and Jenna Ortega (You).
The next installment in the Scream franchise is set for a release date of January 14, 2022, eleven years after Scream 4. Collectively, the Scream franchise has grossed over $608.5 million dollars worldwide over the course of four films, starting with $173 million grossed by the original Scream released in 1996.
