National Cinema Day Makes A Comeback To Theaters With $4 Tickets

After a successful run last year, National Cinema Day is slated to return to theaters this Sunday, August 27th. All movies, for all formats, will sell tickets for just $4 each.

Last year saw the event run on September 3rd, the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Tickets were just $3 last year and proved to be a raging success for theaters, which were still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. The day saw 8.1 million people go to the movies and pulled in a total of $24 million for the day. That was an 8% increase from the Saturday before and had the highest daily attendance for theaters in 2022.

Multiple movies will be released this year on National Cinema Day weekend, including Gran Turismo: Based On A True Story, Golda, The Hill, Retribution, and Bottoms. Other films still running for promotion will be Barbie, Oppenheimer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and Sound Of FreedomEven some classic films are seeing re-release that weekend, including a 3D run of Jurassic Park, Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, and George Lucas’ American Graffiti.

President of The Cinema Foundation, Jackie Brenneman, said, “Following the rousing success of the first annual National Cinema Day, we welcome everyone to join us for the communal experience of one of America’s favorite past times.” She also said that nearly every exhibitor and distributor in the marketplace with a movie will be taking part.

“We’ve been working on this for a while,” she told Deadline. The promotion last year took some smaller distributors by surprise, due to the event being put together very quickly. “We tried to learn from that. To have conversations much earlier, give notice much earlier.”
