‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ Scores Big With $77M Debut in China

Mission: Impossible – Fallout released on Friday, August 31 in China to audience acclaim and huge financial success, giving Tom Cruise the best Chinese opening weekend of his career with strong $77.3 million. Breaking several records, Fallout becomes the best three-day bow to date for the Mission Impossible franchise as well as the best IMAX opening in China.

Rogue Nation earned the best Mission Impossible franchise debut prior to Fallout. The 2015 film racked up $86 million over its first six days, opening on a Tuesday, making direct comparisons a little bit shaky.

Fallout received high praise in China just like in the U.S. It scored 8.3/10 on Douban, the Chinese version of Rotten Tomatoes, and 9.1/10 on ticketing app Maoyan. Director Christopher McQuarrie, along with Fallout cast members Cruise, Henry Cavill, and Simon Pegg traveled to Beijing for a series of promotional events. Chinese tech giant Alibaba also helped boost the film’s box office performance. By serving as the strategic marketing partner of the film, Alibaba promoted Fallout across its online ticketing app, video-streaming service, and myriad e-commerce platforms.

Up to September 2nd, Fallout tallied a total of $649 million worldwide. It is expected to earn more than $700 million globally by the end of its run.
