‘Mean Girls’ Opens With $3.3 Million In Preview Screenings

It’s set to be crowded for releases moving into the weekend ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. However, against these releases, the musical comedy Mean Girls emerges as this school’s queen bee.

Based on the hit 2004 movie of the same name and its Broadway musical adaptationMean Girls made its way to theaters this weekend, looking to have a promising opening following its preview showings. Starting with $3.3 million for early shows, Mean Girls is on track for a $30 million opening, which, as the Hollywood Reporter points out, is on par with Wonka from late last year.

The projected gross already puts it well on its way to making its budget back, with a modest production cost of just $36 million. While Mark Waters helmed the first film, with a script written by Tina Fey, this new telling was directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., with Fey coming back to the production to assist with writing.

Critically speaking, Mean Girls is already landing close to where its predecessor landed. The original currently holds a critic score of 84%, while the new one sits at 71% on its release date.

The new Jason Statham action flick, The Beekeeper, also opens this weekend, with preview showings totaling $2.4 million. Also opening this weekend is The Book Of Clarence and American Fiction, with the latter seeing a limited release.
