‘Mean Girls’ Dominates The Weekend With $31.5 Million Domestically

Moving into the weekend of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Mean Girls stakes its claim at the top of the box office, with no one rivaling the most popular girl in school. With the success it’s finding in theaters, it almost skipped the big screen and went right to streaming.

An adaptation of the Broadway musical, which was adapted from the 2004 film Mean Girls, the new musical was slated to go right to Paramount+. However, when test screenings had a positive reaction, Mean Girls, which only cost $36 million to produce, was sent to theaters.

Off of $11.65 million in Friday and preview showings, Mean Girls is on course for a $31.5 million opening across the four-day opening. Currently holding a B on CinemaScore, Variety points out that if Mean Girls can keep up its momentum, it’ll quickly profit from its production cost.

Buzzing into second place is Jason Statham-led The Beekeeper from Amazon MGM. Taking in $6.7 million on Friday, including preview showings, the action flick has a good chance of landing high teens and even pushing up to $20 million come the end of this weekend. It’s also important to note that the film does get a boost in ticket sales through its IMAX showings.

Third place is held by Wonka, with a lower gross this weekend, but still proves the film has staying power in its fifth weekend. Depicting the humble beginnings of candy connoisseur Willy Wonka, Wonka is on track to bring in $10.3 million across the holiday weekend and may push past $500 million globally by the end of its run.

Anyone But You holds fourth place for the weekend, making $9.25 million, followed by Migration with $6.8 million.
