According to The Hollywood Reporter, Luke Wilson (Brad’s Status) will star opposite Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) in the screen adaptation of The Goldfinch, Donna Tartt’s 2013 best-seller of the same name. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2014. Sarah Paulson (The Post), Jeffrey Wright (The Hunger Games franchise), Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) and Willa Fitzgerald (Beach House) are also in the cast.
John Crowley (Brooklyn) will helm from the adapted screenplay by Peter Straughan (The Snowman). Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force are producing the Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios film. The title of the movie refers to an actual Dutch oil painting, The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius, which the protagonist, Theodore, steals from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the chaos which ensues when a bomb goes off in the museum, killing his mother. The story follows what happens over the next few years to Theodore (Elgort) as he moves in with a wealthy family in New York, then to Las Vegas with his deadbeat, alcoholic father (Wilson) and father’s girlfriend Xendra (Paulson), his work with an antique dealer (Wright), becoming involved in shady art dealings, and how the stolen painting becomes central to his life.
Wilson starred opposite Ben Stiller in Mike White’s mid-life crisis drama Brad’s Status. He just completed filming on Jim Loach’s dramedy Measure of a Man. Wilson has two other films which are currently in post-production – Berlin, I Love You, an anthology feature of 10 love stories set in Berlin, and Jonathan Watson’s dark comedy Arizona.
The Goldfinch will start shooting later this month and is expected to bow in theaters on October 11, 2019.
