Lionsgate In Negotiations to Acquire North American Rights To ‘Jungleland’

According to Deadline, Lionsgate hopes to acquire the North American rights to a Max Winkler-helmed drama called Jungleland, which stars Charlie Hunnam and Jack O’Connell in a saga about bare-fisted boxing. A plethora of distributors are attempting to tap into the film- despite Lionsgate being the frontrunner in negotiations- due to the positive reception it received following the grand premiere in Toronto last autumn.

Hunnam will portray the boxing manager while O’Connell plays his brother, the bare-fisted boxer. Jungleland involves the two siblings getting into trouble with a debt they owe to a local mobster and receive a golden opportunity to remove this financial burden when they travel to San Francisco for a bare-fisted boxing competition known as Jungleland. Jessica Barden and Jonathan Majors will act as supporting characters in the film.

Winkler, who most recently directed Ceremony and Flower, also co-wrote the film’s script alongside writers Theodore Bressman and David Branson Smith. Jungleland is being produced by three studios which include the Romulus Entertainment banner as well as Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions and Big Red Films. These producers consist of a quartet of Jules Daly, Ryan Stowell, Kevin Walsh, and Brad Feinstein. Joseph F. Ingrassia, David Gendron, Ali Jazayeri, Theodore B. Bressman, David Branson Smith, Winkler and Ted Deiker will serve as executive producers on the project.

Jungleland is expected to be released later in 2020.
