Jason Momoa is reprising his role as Aquaman in the upcoming DC film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the second film of the franchise and possibly the last. Momoa doesn’t seem too optimistic about the future of the Aquaman series and neither do DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran. The two filmmakers plan to “to start their own new thing up,” Momoa told Entertainment Tonight, alluding to a wrap up of the Aquaman universe to give room for a new wave of superhero films. Gunn and Safran have officially announced their plans for a Superman reboot Superman: Legacy written by Gunn, a Supergirl film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman titled The Batman – Part II and even a Wonder Woman HBO Max series Paradise Lost (which also means putting an end to Gal Gadot’s role as Wonder Woman).
When asked about a third Aquaman film, director of the franchise James Wan admitted he wanted to revert back to his horror roots after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. He told Collider with uncertainty, “You know, I have a tendency to want to go back and forth….So, you know, I feel like the itch for horror is potentially calling, but we’ll see.”
Momoa, who has portrayed Aquaman since Zach Snyder’s 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and is ocean activist, doesn’t hold back from sharing his love for the merman superhero and admits he’d love to pick up the trident again sometime in the future. “I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time,” he explained to ET. “I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, like there’s a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world. So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it.” As Gunn and Safran rebuild the DC universe, Momoa hopes to be a part of it, even if it means taking on a different role. There has even been speculation from fans about Momoa playing Lobo– an iconic intergalactic bounty hunter in the DC comics– but Momoa has not yet confirmed this. “I was a big Lobo fan growing up, I read every comic,” was all he said when asked about it. “So that would be really cool.”
The long awaited sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will arrive in theaters nationwide on December 22.
