According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Clarke (Everest) is in talks to join the Neil Armstrong biopic First Man starring twice-Oscar nominated actor Ryan Gosling (La La Land). Damien Chazelle, who won the Best Director Oscar this year for La La Land, helms from script by Oscar-winning screenwriter Josh Singer (Spotlight), which is based on James R. Hansen’s biography First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong.
The Universal Pictures/Amblin Entertainment film focuses on NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, and specifically the years 1961-1969. Gosling is set to portray Armstrong, the astronaut who became the first man on the moon. Clarke would play Ed White, the first American to walk in space but who later died in an Apollo mission testing accident. Corey Stoll (Café Society), also being eyed to join the cast, would play another legendary astronaut, Buzz Aldrin. Kyle Chandler (Manchester by the Sea) will play test pilot Deke Slayton.
Clarke starred in Mudbound, hit at Sundance. He plays Ted Kennedy in John Curran’s historical drama Chappaquiddick which is currently in post-production, and is also in the upcoming supernatural thriller Winchester opposite Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren (Trumbo). The busy actor’s other projects include Cedric Jimenez’s The Man With the Iron Heart, and Marc Forster’s All I See Is You.
First Man is scheduled to be released on October 12, 2018.
