Japanese Icon ‘Ultraman’ Getting Movie Adaptation from ‘Shin Godzilla’ Creators

While the Ultraman franchise, also known as the Ultra Series, may not be very recognizable to people in the United States, in Japan Ultraman is considered to be a cultural touch stone. That is why this upcoming Ultraman movie is so important.

According to Screen Rant this new film Shin Ultraman will bed directed by Shinji Higuchi. It will be written and produced by Hideaki Anno, who is known for being the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the co-directer of Shin Godzilla. Three of the movie’s cast members have also been revealed. The actors’ names are Takumi Saito, Masami Nagasawa, and Hidetoshi Nishijima.

The Ultra Series started out as a TV show called Ultra Q which was immediately followed up by another show simply called Ultraman. It is in this second TV show that the titular character of Ultraman makes his debut. This show became extremely popular and solidified Ultraman’s status as an icon in Japanese pop culture. Since the 60’s Ultraman has been an icon appearing in movies, TV shows, merchandise, manga, books, and video games.

Shin Ultraman is set to release in Japan sometime in the year 2021. It is still unknown when or if Shin Ultraman will be getting an international release, but it is probably safe to assume it will be landing stateside soon.
