Chris Pine has been chosen to star as CBS news anchorman Walter Cronkite for the upcoming film Newsflash, which takes place during the events of JFK’s assassination on November 22, 1963. The film will follow Cronkite’s infamous coverage of the assassination on that tragic day in American history and his relationship with another major player: his producer Don Hewitt. According to Deadline, Mark Ruffalo was reportedly in talks to play Hewitt, but his reps shut that down. Seth Rogen was initially approached to play Cronkite and David Gordon Green was attached to direct, but Green left to go film the next Halloween sequel set for an October 16, 2020 release.
The screenplay was written by Ben Jacoby, who wrote Borderland, a 2017 thriller starring Peter Fonda and Bruce Dern. Greg Silverman and Adam Kolbrenner are set to produce the film with Stampede Ventures and are currently looking for a director to helm the project. Newsflash will focus on four men most involved with CBS after JFK’s assassination, Cronkite, Hewitt, their boss Jim Aubrey, and Dan Rather, a journalist from Texas who tried to uncover the assassination’s events and deliver them to the American public.
Pine’s recent acting roles include Wonder Woman, A Wrinkle in Time, Outlaw King, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. He’s currently set to reprise his role as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 1984, which will be released on June 5, 2020.
