Jack Black is set to appear in the upcoming Warner Bros. film based on the best-selling videogame of the same name Minecraft.
The Vertigo and Legendary project’s take on Mojang’s iconic game will star Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jack Black who will be playing the role of Steve, the franchise’s lead, Deadline reports. Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Momoa, Torfi Frans Olafsson, and Vu Bui are the producers, including the late Jill Messick who passed away in 2018.
Aside from Minecraft, Black has another connection to video games for his role as Bowser in 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $1.36 billion worldwide. His contribution to writing the iconic song “Peaches” earned him his third Golden Globe nomination. Black will also be portraying the comic relief robot Claptrap in Lionsgate’s adaptation of the video game franchise Borderlands, which will hit theaters on August 9. Months before that release, Black will star in the anticipated fourth installment of Kung Fu Panda titled Kung Fu Panda 4, in which he will reprise his role as Po, arriving soon in theaters on March 8.
Minecraft, which was released back in 2011, has since then become one of the highest-grossing video games, selling over 300 million copies. The Minecraft film, which has been in development since 2014, is still under wraps with a determined release date of April 4, 2025.
