Incredibles 2, the much-anticipated animated superhero sequel, claimed the top spot at this weekend’s domestic box office. It also broke the record for top-grossing animated movie, according to Variety, a title previously held by Finding Dory (another Pixar sequel, which bowed with $135 million).
Incredibles 2, which stars Craig T. Nelson as Robert Parr and Holly Hunter as Helen Parr, easily eclipsed Dory‘s total with $180 million, destroying projections from last week. After a 14-year hiatus, the film picks up exactly where the first film left off, with Supers (the franchise’s term for superheroes) finally coming out of hiding and embracing their powers once again.
In addition to best animated opening, Incredibles 2 surpassed 2017’s live-action remake Beauty and the Beast (which opened with $174 million) as the best debut for a PG-rated film.
It was an easy race for the top spot, as the other two films opening this weekend struggled to keep up. Last weekend’s top film, Ocean’s 8, landed at number 2 with $19.5 million. Of the newcomers, Tag, chronicling longstanding game of tag between a group of friends, took in $14.6 million, while Superfly managed $8.4 million over a five-day opening.
Disney seems to be back on track with Incredibles 2 (after Solo‘s relative struggles), as it now owns the top 3 highest grossing opening weekends of 2018. The other two top spots go to Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War with $257 million, and Disney’s Black Panther with $202 million.
