Guillermo Del Toro Shares Details On Scrapped ‘Star Wars’ Film

Guillermo Del Toro saw a new bit of success earlier this year, with his brand new animated film, Pinocchio, winning best animated picture at the Academy Awards. While his films have been well received and beloved by many, some would consider pairing him with the massive franchise Star Wars to be a match made in heaven. And it was a match that almost came to pass.

Confirming it on X, four years ago, Del Toro was set to direct a Star Wars movie, with David S. Goyer, writer of Batman Begins, in line to write the script. As Variety reports, Goyer recently spoke about the scrapped movie on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“I wrote an un-produced ‘Star Wars’ movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct. That was about four years ago,” he said, “There was a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time. It’s a cool script… you have to ask him about it. There is a lot of cool art work from it that was produced.”

Del Toro himself took the chance to add his thoughts on the matter. On X, he shared the interview, saying, “true. Can’t say much. Maybe two letters ‘J’ and ‘BB’ is that three letters?” And as Variety was quick to point out, this could give Star Wars fans decades of speculation, with those 2 letters correlating to countless names and terms within the lore.

Goyer even had done some work on another project in the series, one that was to explore the origins of the Jedi order. Goyer and Lucasfilm did part ways after a while, but a similar film from James Mangold is now on the horizon.
