According to Deadline, Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) is set to star as Lou Gehrig in a biopic of the New York Yankees baseball player. The movie is said to be produced By Lorne Michaels (SNL) and directed by Richard Linklater (Boyhood). No confirmed sources or other information for the untitled project has been confirmed as of now.
This is not the first time Lou Gehrig has gotten a biopic. In 1942 The Pride Of The Yankees, starred Gary Cooper as Gehrig and followed his story of his life before and during his time on the Yankees. The movie received 10 nominations and won one for Best Editing. The movie also starred Babe Ruth as himself, who is another Yankee player of that era of baseball. There is no information if the movie will follow the same structure as the 1942 version or if other baseballs players will be featured in the film.
This biopic will also not be the first time Powell has starred in a sports film. In 2016, he played Finnegan in Everybody Wants Some, a movie about baseball players living in a college frat house. More recently he’s been starring in Chad Powers, a Hulu t.v. series about a football player trying to fix his reputation disguised as a different person.
