The first trailer has been released for The Debut, a musical comedy written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg and starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. The film stars Moore as a socially awkward woman who is cast in a local community theater’s production of an original musical and then placed under the guidance of the production’s demanding director. The film is a musical, but not in the traditional sense. While it features original music written by Jesse Eisenberg, all the songs will be diegetic and come directly from the musical being performed by the characters.
In addition to Moore and Giamatti, the film’s cast consists of Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, Maulik Pancholy, Bernadette Peters, and Cara Buono. In addition to writing, directing, and composing the film’s original songs, Eisenberg also plays a role in the film. He’s also producing, alongside Dave McCary, Emma Stone, and Ali Herting. Ryan Heller is Executive Producing. The film is Eisenberg’s third directing effort. His first, 2022’s When You Finish Saving the World, also starred Julianne Moore, alongside Finn Wolfhard. His second directing effort, 2024’s A Real Pain, earned Kiran Culkin an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
A24 will be releasing The Debut in theaters later this year. The first trailer can be viewed below:
