First Trailer ‘News of the World’ Starring Tom Hanks Drops

The first trailer for News of the World starring Tom Hanks, who plays Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd in a post Civil War America, has been released by Universal pictures on Thursday. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 25.

The film reunites Hanks and director Paul Greengrass for the first time since 2013’s Best Picture Oscar nominees Captain Phillips.

The film is based on a novel written by Paulette Jiles in 2016 about Captain Kidd in 1870 and travels through northern Texas, giving live readings to audiences from town to town who wanted to hear the news of the world. In Texas, he finds Johanna (Helen Zengel), a 10-year-old taken in by Kiowa people and raises her as their own, who six years earlier murdered her parents and sister. Kidd agrees to deliver the young orphan girl to her relatives, and the pair travel hundreds of miles through the wilderness to get her back to her family.

“‘News of the World’ is set in a bitterly divided dangerous world, and it is a journey of discovery for both Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks) and the girl, Johanna (Helen Zengel),” said Greengrass. “Both characters are lost in different ways and are searching for belonging. That is what gives the journey tremendous emotional power.”

Notably, the film coincides with the release date of Wonder Woman 1984, so the two movies will duke it out on Christmas.
