Director Francis Lee of award-winning pastoral romance God’s Own Country is tackling queer romance once again, this time between women on the coast of England in the 1840s. Ammonite, starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, got its first trailer this week, showing us the first glimpses of this romance drama.
The film follows renowned paleontologist Mary Anning (Winslet) who gets an unexpected visit from a man asking her to take on his wife (Ronan) as an apprentice to combat her frequent bouts of melancholy. She reluctantly agrees, and the two wander along the English coast excavating fossils, and forming a close bond along the way.
The trailer showcases the same delicacy that Lee applied in God’s Own Country, with long, sustained gazes and soft, cool lighting and colors. The scenery is also beautiful, setting the stage for romance well with the seaside cliffs and old English homes.
After being selected at Cannes, Telluride, and Toronto International Film Festivals, the film is definitely a possible contestant in the upcoming awards season. Winslet and Ronan are also both award winning actresses, giving the film its star power and emotional backbone.
Distributed by NEON, the film is tentatively scheduled to release in the US on November 13, 2020. The trailer can be viewed below.
