Elizabeth Banks’ Brownstone Productions Taps Karen Maine to Direct Screen Gems Rom-Com ‘Miss Conception’

Karen Maine seems to have made big impression with her directorial debut, Yes God, Yes. The writer-director was recently brought on by Elizabeth BanksBrownstone Productions to direct new romantic comedy from Screen Gems, Miss Conception.

No details about the plot of have been unveiled, but it will likely be in a similar vein to Maine’s previous projects. There is also no word on the cast or when production will begin.

Maine’s indie dramedy Yes God, Yes released to critical acclaim earlier this year. The film stars Stranger ThingsNatalia Dyer as a Catholic teenager in the early 00s who discovers masturbation and struggles to suppress her new urges in the face of eternal damnation.

Critics praised Dyer’s comedic performance and Maine’s sensitive direction. The film currently has a 94 percent certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 108 critic reviews.

Maine recently directed the BBC pilot Starstruck, which was received with straight to series order from BBC and HBO Max. The series will have six-episodes and follow a young woman in London who works two jobs and has to navigate an awkward morning after discovering the complications of sleeping with a movie star. The series is written by and starring New Zealand-Born comedian Rose Matafeo.
