Disappointed about the news that Disney/Marvel and Sony haven’t come to an agreement about financing future Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man films? Well brace yourselves, because Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra has confirmed that “for the moment the door is closed” on Spider-Man’s involvement in the MCU.
This is new information for fans who had heard from previous releases, including one of our own, that there were still conversations going on between Disney/Marvel and Sony. And while that still may be true, even for Vinciquerra who seemed to say that the doors could be opened back up in the distant future, it is all but done that the next few films featuring Tom Holland as Spider-Man will be without the Marvel Studios intro.
Vinciquerra, however, is optimistic about the future of Spider-Man outside of the MCU. With the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the Amazon/Sony television series The Boys, Vinciquerra is convinced that our favorite web-slinger will be “just fine.”
As for Sony’s relationship with Marvel going forward, Vinciquerra said there is “no ill will,” and that “Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well. I think we’re pretty capable of doing what we have to do here.”
Sony has plans to launch more of the Spidey universe now that they have sole control of the Spider-Man property again. Fans will have to be patient in order to see what becomes of Spider-Man and the universe in which he lives. Will we see that Peter Parker cameo in an upcoming film? We hope so.
