For the first time since 1993, those pesky plumbers, Mario and Luigi, have returned to the big screen in their newest adventure from Illumination. Despite some early ridicule before the film’s initial release, it opened to monstrous success financially and among long-time fans of the franchise.
The Super Mario Bros. story follows the general plot of the games, with plumbing brothers Mario and Luigi getting sucked into the fantastical Mushroom Kingdom and helping them stop the villainous Bowser from taking control of the kingdom for his use.
The movie has been so successfully lucrative that even Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, has come forth to share few thoughts on the matter. “It certainly proves people love to be entertained in theaters around the world, and it gives us reason to be optimistic about the movie business.”
With the success of the film and the end credit tease, fans can all but count on a sequel to the film to be announced soon. Last weekend, it surpassed $500 million domestically and crossed $1 billion worldwide since its release on April 5th. Even after being in theaters for over a month, it has still held on to a top 5 spot at the box office. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, put out by Illumination, stars Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black. Check out our review here.
