While the WGA is currently on strike and SAG-AFTRA is on rocky ground as well, those within the Directors Guild of America have ratified a new contract for film and television, with 87% in favor, and 13% opposed. 6,728 of the members voted out of 16,321 eligible voters, with the DGA stating that the turnout for this vote exceeded any prior vote for the guild.
President of the DGA, Lesli Linka Glatter, commented on the change coming amidst the issues for the writers and actors. “We stand united with writers, actors, and all crew members in our shared fight to move our industry forward. We support the actors who are in negotiations and the writers who remain on strike, and we will stand with the IATSE and Teamsters when they negotiate their agreement next year.”
Deadline reported on the details of the agreements in depth, which included details regarding wages and benefits, global streaming residuals, artificial intelligence, non-dramatic programs, high-budget AVOD terms and conditions, feature and episodic directors, and lastly, safety.
The board for the DGA, which includes Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Lesli Linka Glatter, Ron Howard, and Ava DuVernay, unanimously voted in favor of the change. As well as this, the WGA released an official statement, commending the DGA, with the DGA in turn asking the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to reappear in talks with the WGA. The leaders of the Directors Guild of America have called this change “truly historic”.
