Due to the current world climate, hundreds of films have had delayed releases. With a second wave of shut-downs happening, U.S. theaters will not be opened. With 2020 coming to a close, many companies have had to make unprecedented decisions on how to release their films. Last year, Disney announced many new films to look forward to, such as three live-action remakes of the House of Mouse, three Marvel entries and the final episode of Star Wars’ Skywalker Saga. According to Cinema Blend, Because of this discouraging year for theaters, Disney is deciding whether or not to move future live-action remakes, such as Craig Gillespie’s Cruella, straight to the streaming platform Disney+.
Only one Disney film made it to theaters this year, and that was Pixar’s Onward. The animated film came out shortly before the pandemic and was sent to Disney+ soon afterwards. Other films that have been released on Disney+ include: Artemis Fowl, Hamilton, The One and Only Ivan and Mulan. Straight to streaming films has increased this year by 41%, and Disney+ subscriptions grew to an exceptional 73.7 million in October. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, it appears that these numbers will only go up from here.
