‘Coming 2 America’ Sweeps the 2022 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Awards

The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild held its ninth annual awards ceremony last Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Coming 2 America dominated the evening, taking home the award for best contemporary make-up and hairstyling. In a surprise win, the film beat out the likes of Dune, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and House Of Gucci — all Oscar front-runners — for Best Special Make-Up effects.

The Eddie Murphy film won three awards, the most for a feature film, including Best Contemporary Make-up, Contemporary Hairstyling and Make-up and Special Make-Up Effects. Also in the feature competition, Cruella won for period and/or character make-up, and Being The Ricardos won the award for period and/or character hair styling.

Coming 2 America, alongside Dune, Cruella, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and House of Gucci are all nominated for the Make-Up and Hair Styling award at the Oscars this year.

The live ceremony was held on Saturday at the Beverly Hilton hotel. COVID-19 protocols were held in place, including proof of vaccination and a negative test for all attendees. MUAHS Awards masks were distributed to guests.

Jon Favreau virtually accepted this year’s Distinguished Artisan Award. Michele Burke, the first woman to win an Oscar for hair and makeup, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award alongside Joy Zapata for their work in hair and make-up, respectively.
