Though the music is still playing, and the players are still shuffling about, it appears that when it stops Christian Bale will be sitting in the role of tech icon Steve Jobs. As covered by The Hollywood Reporter, Bale is in talks once again for the lead role in Sony’s Untitled Steve Jobs Biopic, which is being directed by Danny Boyle.
Bale had been the first choice of David Fincher back in March, when the Gone Girl director was negotiating with the studio to make the Jobs biopic his next project. Those talks soon fell apart however, and Fincher left the project. Danny Boyle was then brought aboard to take the helm, and up until couple weeks ago, it appeared as though Leonardo DiCaprio would be playing the lead. DiCaprio however took his hat out of the ring in favor of starring in The Revenant, and the search has been back on ever since. Now it appears as though things have come full circle, with Bale nearing a deal to play Jobs, as a result of negotiations on The Deep Blue Goodbye going south in recent days.
The actor has been busy ever since completing his trio of Dark Knight films with Christopher Nolan. Last year he starred in both Out of the Furnace and American Hustle, and will next be seen in Ridley Scott’s biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings. Director Boyle is at an interesting point in his career, having found back to back success with Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and 127 Hours (2010), only to come crashing down to earth with his last movie, 2013’s much-maligned Trance.
The Untitled Steve Jobs Biopic will of course be based on the bestselling novel Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, published in 2011. Sony purchased the rights to the book right around the time of Jobs’ death. Aaron Sorkin (Moneyball, The Social Network) was hired to write the adaptation, and the studio has been trying to line up its star and director ever since. Now it appears they may have finally gotten all the big pieces lined up.
