Chris Pine is in talks to star in the live-action Dungeons and Dragons that is based on Hasbro’s insanely popular role-playing game from the Wizards of the Coast. Hasbro/eOne and Paramount are teaming up to produce and finance the film with eOne in the United Kingdom and Canada and Paramount for the rest of the world.
The duo behind Game Night that starred Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will direct and write the script based on a draft by Michael Gilion.
The game is known for its wargame, treasure quests, campaigns, camaraderie, and reversals of fortune, all in a place that incorporates humans, elves, orcs, and wizards. It all revolves around multi-sided dice that are controlled by the host, who is best known as the Dungeon Master.
It isn’t the first time that Dungeons and Dragons were adapted into a movie. New Line Cinema first adapted it in 2000 that starred Justin Whalin (Child’s Play 3), Marlon Wayans (White Chicks), and Jeremy Irons (Watchmen) but was a total flop. Unfortunately, like the game, it has been in battle, involving several years in the courts over rights.
The game first launched 46 years ago, with more than 40 million times played. Video games and live-streaming on Twitch and YouTube were created after its enormous success.
