Curry Barker is already getting high praises for his next feature film Anything But Ghosts, which is highly anticipated not just because Barker’s Obsession was the surprise blockbuster of the year but also will be his first major feature film on-camera debut as he will star alongside his frequent collaborator and producing partner Cooper Tomlinson. But who is the breakout filmmaker getting praised by? Seth Rogen wrote an article about Barker for Time magazine when he was chosen for Time100 Next 2026’s The World’s Most Influential Rising Stars piece back late last September. Rogen described the “electric” experience of seeing Obsession in the theater for the first time, turning his attention to Anything But Ghosts, with the Emmy-winning filmmaker stating,
I’ve seen Curry’s next film, Anything But Ghosts—and for those of you who, like me, are uncomfortable with this amount of talent in a person so young, I have bad news … it’s even better, and, to add insult to injury, he’s just as good an actor as he is a director.
Barker gave his own thoughts and fears about comparing his upcoming movie to Obsession, telling The Hollywood Reporter,
It’s a buddy comedy, but it’s still going to be scary and messed up. You can’t not have these feelings when your first movie is breaking box office records, and you’re in your room editing your next movie thinking, ‘Oh my god, did I take this beat from Obsession?’ Thank God I have people around me to ground me and tell me that Anything But Ghosts is good and different, and that’s OK. Nobody wants the same movie twice. So people can expect it to be very different than Obsession, but my voice will still be very strong in it.
While Barker confirmed that this film will take place in the same fictional universe as Obsession, it will have nothing to do with those characters and plot, instead focusing on two fake paranormal investigators, Eddy and Mouse, played by Tomlinson and Barker respectively, who suddenly must take on real ghosts when they are hired by a couple who reside in a real haunted house. The script was written by Barker and Tomlinson and wrapped the month before Obsession was released. Bryce Dallas Howard, Aaron Paul, and Violet McGraw are also among the cast.
Anything But Ghosts will be released in theaters on May 7th, 2027.
