Check Out the Rumored Short-List of Directors for the ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot

There is a list of five directors being rumored for the Spider-Man reboot Sony is putting together with Marvel Cinematic Universe mastermind Kevin Feige, according to Deadline. Jonathan Levine (50/50), Ted Melfi (St. Vincent), Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein (Vacation), and Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) are all apparently up for the high-profile directing gig, again, according to rumor.

The project is the result of a new deal Marvel formed with Sony after Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to reach the success Sony wanted. Under the agreement, Feige will help Sony with the Spider-Man solo films while Marvel will reserve the right to include the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The web-slinger is expected to make an appearance in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, as Spidey plays a crucial role in the original story since he is one of the few Marvel characters with a secret identity.

This is just one of the many rumors circling the movie. Most recently, there was a rumor saying the title would be Spider-Man: The New Avenger. Rumors surrounding who will be the next Peter Parker have been bandied about as well and include Asa Butterfield (Enders Game), Tom Holland (Locke), Liam James (The Way, Way Back), and Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars). The casting announcement will likely come before the director is decided on, due to the character’s appearance in Civil War.

Spider-Man will also make an appearance in animated form with Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie) directing. While both Marvel and rival DC have released straight-to-video animated films, this will be the first time an animated superhero movie will get a theatrical release.

The live-action Spider-Man movie is currently expected to hit theaters July 28, 2017, though that could change as the project moves forward.
