Check Out Teaser Trailer for Steven Spielberg’s ‘The BFG’

Walt Disney Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for their adaptation of the Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) novel The BFG. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies) and is the director’s first children’s film since 2011’s The Adventures of Tintin.

The trailer follows the story’s main character Sophie (Ruby Barnhill, TV’s 4 O’Clock Club) who upon staying up late, is kidnapped by a giant known as The BFG (Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies). Sophie soon discovers that BFG is an outcast in the giant community because he refuses to eat boys and girls like the rest of them.

Disney appears to have found a style for its live-action fairy tales as the film appears to have a very similar, albeit slightly darker, tone to the likes of Cinderella, Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland. However, this is the first live-action fairy tale film featuring the Disney name in the title that is not based on one of their existing films.

This is the the seventh major film to adapt Dahl’s work including the most recent Fantastic Mr. Fox and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Along with Disney, Spielberg’s production companies Dreamworks and Amblin Entertainment are behind the film. It also stars Rebecca Hall (The Gift), Bill Hader (Maggie’s Plan), and Jemaine Clement (People Places Things).

The BFG will release July 1. In the meantime, you can check out the trailer below.
