The box office has definitely not been predictable this weekend, with expected frontrunner, the Elizabeth Banks directed reboot of Charlie’s Angels, coming in second to unexpected underdog Ford v. Ferrari.
The numbers came in at $31 million for Ford v. Ferrari and only $8 million for Charlie’s Angels. Reviews may have impacted these numbers, as the first place film had much higher ratings with an A+ Cinemascore and Rotten Tomatoes scores in the nineties. Charlie’s Angels landed bit below that at a B+ Cinemascore and a Rotten Tomatoes average of 70% approval.
These numbers for the Charlie’s Angels franchise mark a notable low point, as the last installments from 2000 and 2003 had openings in the upper 30 millions-lower 40 millions.
This may just be another casualty to the trend of franchise fatigue that has taken down some big names at the box office this year. Just this past month, Terminator: Dark Fate also underperformed significantly despite the star power of reuniting Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton. The only films that seem to be immune to the box office struggle this year are Disney and Marvel films, which despite some being remakes, still manage to bring in large audiences. There are still some big releases planned for the year, but the most anticipated are, of course, Disney franchise pieces Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
