In 2012, the conclusion of 21 Jump Street left viewers questioning whether a sequel was in the works; now, it is confirmed that 22 Jump Street has gotten the green light from Columbia Pictures, and photography is set to begin in New Orleans in September.
Channing Tatum (White House Down) and Jonah Hill (This is the End) are set to star return for the sequel as young cops Jenko and Schmidt respectively, who head undercover onto a college campus to bust criminals. Tatum and Hill are also producers on the newest film, along with Fast and Furious producer Neal H. Moritz.
Another actor from the original film confirmed to return for the sequel is Ice Cube (Are We There Yet?), who plays the boys’ commanding officer. Brie Larson, who starred in the original film, will not be returning for the sequel, but no other members of the cast have been confirmed or denied as of yet.
21 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be directing the sequel, with writers Oren Uziel and Michael Bacall writing the script.
In an interview with The Collider, Phil Lord said, “It’s more about their marriage, basically. If the first movie is about two people getting together for the first time, this is about what happens if you try to really make the relationship work. We’ll probably never do another bromance after this one, but we’re trying to get as emotionally deep into that as possible.”
Since the first movie set up a sequel well, 22 Jump Street should do well in the box office, supported by fans of the original movie. Hill and Tatum have great chemistry, and Lord’s desire to focus on their bromance should play out well in the new movie.
