Period romance Carol has received the Frankfurt Book Fair prize for best literary adaptation. The world’s largest trade fair for the international publishing industry, the Frankfurt Book Fair had upwards of 270,000 attendees from more than 100 different countries visit this year. The film adaptation laurel launched in 2004 to better attract and help strengthen the publishing and film industries. Past winners of the prize have included A Most Wanted Man (2014) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011).
Carol, directed by Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven) and written by Phyllis Nagy (Mrs. Harris), stars Cate Blanchett (Truth) and Rooney Mara (Pan) as two women who fall in love in 1950s New York. The movie is based on the novel The Price of Milk by Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley). Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Sarah Paulson (12 Years a Slave) co-star. Frankfurt Book Fair director Juergen Boos said of the film:
In elaborately composed shots, Todd Haynes revives the repressive atmosphere of the 1950s. With ‘Carol,’ he tells the love story of two women who defy society’s narrow moral values. As he did in ‘Far From Heaven,’ here Todd Haynes once again creates film on a grand emotional scale, without it feeling kitschy or sentimental.
Carol has received nearly unanimous raves from critics since premiering in competition at the Cannes Film Festival last spring- with Mara winning the Best Actress prize. Since then, Carol has been screened at the Telluride and New York film festivals, with stop at AFI Fest in early November. This week, the drama earned three Gotham Award nominations (including Best Feature and Best Screenplay). The Weinstein Company will release the awards hopeful on November 20th.
