Carey Mulligan’s new Focus Features thriller, Promising Young Woman, has just crossed the $3 million mark during its fourth week in theaters. The feature-length directorial debut by English actor, author, screenwriter and producer Emerald Fennell, is on track to earn over $518,000 at over 1,300 theaters during the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. For a smaller-scale film during its fourth week, that’s an impressive sum.
Promising Young Woman stars Mulligan as a woman traumatized by a devastating event from her past who seeks vengeance upon those that cross her path. The film also stars Eighth Grade director and comedian Bo Burnham, Glow and Community star Alison Brie and Superbad actor Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
The film’s continued success could be due in part to the accolades and awards-season attention it’s received. The Los Angeles Film Critic’s Association awarded the film with best actress as well as best screenplay. According to the film’s IMDB page, Promising Young Woman has earned 22 wins in addition to 60 nominations. It also sits at comfortable 91% certified fresh critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with 274 reviews.
The film was also recently made available for on-demand rental on most platforms, so even if you don’t want to make the trip out to see it in theaters, you can now watch it in the comfort of your own home.
