After last year’s hit Captain Marvel was the first female-led Marvel film, now Disney is planning to keep its momentum going by giving the film sequel, which is officially going into production now. The upcoming lineup of Marvel films is already looking packed, with Black Widow out this year and The Eternals, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and Shang-Chi on the horizon. Black Widow will be the second Marvel film fronted by a woman and this time also directed by a woman, Cate Shortland.
Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will not be returning to helm the sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Instead Marvel is on the hunt for a new female director to take over, and will move Boden and Fleck to the producing side of the film. WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell is on board to write the script, as she is already familiar with writing in the Marvel universe. Boden and Fleck may also be staying in the Marvel family by directing a series for Disney +.
Captain Marvel 2 is eyeing a 2022 release date, which means they’ve got to get busy confirming a director. Brie Larson and other members of the original cast will be returning to the film, but the time period will be moving from the 1990’s to the MCU’s present after Avengers: Endgame.
