It’s been an especially good week for Bong Joon-Ho, director of the award-sweeping South Korean drama Parasite. After winning the Screen Actors Guild award for Best Ensemble on Sunday, the Best Director Oscar nominee has revealed to TheWrap further details about an upcoming HBO adaptation of his film.
Joon-Ho announced plans for the adaptation earlier this month, which he will develop alongside Succession’s Adam McKay for HBO. Stating that he “just couldn’t include all those ideas in the two-hour running time of the film,” the director revealed his ideas to currently be “stored in my iPad, and my goal with this limited series is to create a six-hour-long film.”
Aiming to expand on ideas and themes from the original film, the series will explore small details included in Parasite that Joon-Ho refers to as “hidden stories.” Expanding on this, he stated that “With cinema, you’re limited to a two-hour running time. But there were so many stories that I thought of that could happen in between the sequences you see in the film, and some background stories for each character.”
He went on to hint at exploring a larger backstory for the film’s housekeeper Moon-gwang, including just how exactly she ended up with that unexplained scar on her face. As to when the series will actually premiere? Joon-Ho’s answer of “Maybe 2027” will have to suffice for now.
