Irish filmmaker John Crowley, riding on the success of the Oscar-nominated picture Brooklyn, which he directed last year, is set to direct The Goldfinch. Deadline first broke the news.
Based on the Pulitzer prize-winning bestselling novel of the same name by Donna Tartt, the story follows a New York teenager, Theodore Decker, who survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum and in the ensuing chaos, steals a world-famous painting entitled The Goldfinch.
The screenplay is adapted by Peter Straughan (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy). The film will be produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force, along with RatPac’s Brett Ratner. James Packer will executive produce while Courtenay Valenti and Racheline Benveniste are overseeing for Warner Bros.
Crowley’s 2007 drama Boy A won him a BAFTA for Best Director. In addition to directing for the big screen, Crowley has also directed on Broadway (A Behanding In Spokane, A Steady Rain, The Pillowman) and will direct two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett (Carol) in her Broadway debut next year in The Present, a re-imagining of Chekhov’s first play.
