Blumhouse ‘Freaky’ Takes Number One Spot on Friday the 13th Weekend Box Office

Christopher Landon’s Blumhouse Horror-Comedy Freaky opened in theaters this past weekend and took the number one spot with only $3.7 million, dramatic difference in past Blumhouse films. According to Deadline, the film has accumulated $3.7M after a $1.4M Saturday that dipped 6% from Friday’s $1.5M. Including overseas, Freaky has made a total of $1.9M from 20 territories, including Australia, and its global start stands at $5.6M. Blumhouse’s last number one film was The Invisible Man, with $28.2M before the pandemic. This highlights how much of a dramatic decrease the Box Office has been making since Covid hit.

The film stars Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton. Vaughn and Newton play serial killer and a teenage girl respectively, and the two switch bodies. The film is a darker twisted take on Freaky Friday. Although the film has generated a lot of positive reviews from the audience and critics, with a 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, movie theaters in North America are for the most part still closed due to the pandemic. It will be interesting to see if grosses are higher over Thanksgiving break, but it looks as though the normal days of the theater and box office are gone for now.

Melissa Cusano: I love to escape reality with reading, writing, movies, and music! If I'm not working I love to go to concerts (pre-covid), play video games, and hang out with my dog Ozzi.
