Angela Bassett Joins ‘Black Panther’

Angela Bassett appears primed to make her Marvel debut. This afternoon, news officially broke that the Oscar-nominated actress will join the cast of Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther. The American Horror Story alum is set to portray Ramonda, the mother of the title character (Chadwick Boseman). Boseman debuted his character in this summer’s blockbuster Captain America: Civil War.

Creed and Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler will direct the hotly anticipated title. Alongside Boseman and the aforementioned Bassett, the impressive ensemble cast will also feature Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, and Florence Kasumba and Oscar winners Forest Whitaker and Lupita Nyong’oBlack Panther tells the story of T’Challa, the new ruler of the advanced kingdom of Wakanda, who must defend his land from being broken apart by enemies.

Bassett, who received an Oscar nod for her iconic take on Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It?, was last seen on screen in London Has Fallen. She also recently co-starred in Spike Lee’s critically admired Chi-Raq and the indie White Bird in a Blizzard. She has also appeared in the last four season of the FX anthology hit American Horror Story, earning consecutive Emmy nominations for 2014 and 2015.

Black Panther is set to hit theaters on February 16, 2018.
