Horror has always been a niche film genre that has never really gained the traction that many other genres have garnered over the years. Recently, however, the genre has been making a name for itself with the sudden interest of audiences and the rise of low-budget, high-grossing films from production companies like Blumhouse.
A Quiet Place follows this new trend, with the John Krasinski-directed movie looking to draw huge $50.3 million opening weekend at the box office, according to Variety. If the estimate is correct, the film will be the third-highest opening weekend box office for horror movies, just behind It (2017) and Paranormal Activity 3, two films that are already a part of storied franchises. However, A Quiet Place is not the only film that is showing significant traction.
Black Panther continues its high-endurance run up the box office records, showing that the film is still popular even after eight weeks. The film is set to take the number four spot for the weekend with $8.8 million, and in its current state, has just launched past Titanic to become the third-highest-grossing domestic film of all time, only behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avatar.
Currently, the top three films of the weekend are: A Quiet Place at number one; the Steven Spielberg-helmed sci-fi epic Ready Player One at number two; and the John Cena-led comedy Blockers at number three. It will be fun to see how next week will fare for the big thriller and we are interested to see who will hold the top spot.
